The procedure for acquiring Belgian nationality is expected to become significantly more expensive. The current administrative fee of €150 will be raised to €1,000, with annual indexation to follow. While this increase was initially announced for July 1, 2025, the measure is part of a draft programme law submitted on May 27, which still needs to be approved and published in the Belgian Official Gazette before it takes effect.
Importantly, according to the Federal Public Service Finance, it is the date of payment—not the date of submission—that will determine the applicable fee. This clarification is particularly relevant for applicants seeking to submit their application before the price increase takes effect. It should also help reduce congestion at local municipal counters.
Anyone preparing to apply for Belgian nationality is therefore strongly encouraged to act without delay.
Further Substantive Changes Ahead
In addition to the fee increase, stricter conditions related to language proficiency and social integration are also expected. Applicants will need to demonstrate a stronger command of a national language and evidence of effective integration into Belgian social and economic life.
These new requirements are expected to enter into force sometime in 2026, subject to the finalization of legislative texts and ongoing administrative procedures.
